Project Overview
This project examines the lives and historical significance of the first Black valedictorians, salutatorians, student body presidents, and other campus leaders in formerly segregated Southern high schools between 1968 - 2000. Using oral histories, yearbooks, local newspapers, school board records, and community archies, the research documents the emergence of Black academic leadership in the post-Civil Rights South and situates these individual achievements within broader regional transformations in education.
Significance of the Project
This project contributes to African American, Southern and educational history by shifting attention from court rulings and policy debates to the lived experiences of students who entered newly integrated schools. By documenting academic and leadership milestones, the project will reveal how Black students reshaped expectations of merit, leadership and belonging in the modern South.
