Andrea L. Oliver was the first in her family to have an entirely desegregated public schooling experience in her native Madison County, a rural county in the northern Florida panhandle. She graduated third in her class and was student body president during her senior year of high school.
Oliver went on to receive three degrees from formerly segregated Florida State University, receiving a doctorate in American History in 2010. She has authored several textbooks at the pre-collegiate and collegiate levels. She has over 30 years of experience as a history educator and has taught hundreds of students to apply a critical lens to this nation’s past. In 2023, she added educational consultant to her resume, starting EduPowerment, empowering teachers through proven classroom management strategies and helping them discover the power of AI in the classroom.

The Genius of the Harlem Renaissance Volume 1 is the first of a two-volume reader. This first volume consists for the most part of readings from the first part of the Harlem Renaissance (1915–1926). As the twentieth century approached, Black creatives made substantial contributions to America’s cultural lifeblood. Their works were signs of things to come and set the stage for the expressive explosion of literature and art we now know as the Harlem Renaissance.
A Long Time Coming seeks to broaden your knowledge and appreciation of the contributions of a group that has been either ignored or marginalized in traditional historical narratives. You will learn more about the people, sociopolitical forces and the places that have defined the African American presence in this country.
During the Harlem Renaissance, there was a burst of Black art, from music to literature to visual art. Much of this art encouraged viewers to embrace the idea of Black pride and a variety of Black experiences beyond stereotypes. The Harlem Renaissance set the stage for Black artists for decades, and even now continues to inspire Black cultural production. Students will engage with some of this art as well as popular debates of the time.
